Prof. dr habil. Kazimierz Równy, emeritus, International Law Association Polish Branch (ILA) Honorary President, for about 25 years has been specializing in Int’l and European Law of Sustainable Development (in Environmental Protection).

Taught at the Warsaw School of Economics, the University of Warsaw and also worked in the Institute of Law Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Abroad he also worked (as UNESCO expert) in Nigeria at the Obafemi Awolowo University at Ile-Ife in 1972-76, later at the University of Jos (1987/-90) at the last being also the Dean of the Law Faculty. He had occasional lectures at other universities, i.a.: at the Harvard Law School and the School of Law of the Washington University in Seattle.

His early writings have mostly been dealing with the legal problems of international peace and security, later he dealt with Int’l Economic Law (i.a. GATT) and with legal problems of the world’s decolonization and the succession to international treaties.

His interest in Environmental Protection Law started (partly) in early 60’s (the law of international rivers), then continued in The Research Project on Law of International Watercourses in Africa (UNESCO sponsored at Ife University). Since the end of 1980’s moved to broader field of Environmental Protection Law, especially researching to its general regulatory principle of sustainable development (SD).

Participated in many domestic and Int’l conferences devoted to environmental law and personally organized some of the conferences dedicated to theory and practice of SD principle. His book – Ku międzynarodowemu i porównawczemu prawu zrównoważonego rozwoju w ochronie środowiska (Towards International and Comparative Law of Sustainable Development in Environmental Protection), Warszawa 2010 – contains selection of his research in that field. Most recently he published a large article: Rio+20 dla wdrażania zrównoważonego rozwoju a prawo ochrony środowiska i jego nauka w Polsce [Rio+20 for Sustainable Development Implementation, the Polish Law and its teaching – http:/newsletter.oapuw.pl].

He has been much engaged in the ILA work from 1960 to 2001: member of its Land-Locked States, Water Resources Law and (apart from formal membership) Sustainable Development Committees. In the Polish ILA Branch he has been Chairman of the Committee on Int’l and Comparative Law of Sustainable Development I Environmental Protection (cf. K.
